Preface

Every individual is a unique being. Although he has many traits
In common with his contemporaries, he has certain concepts, ideas,
and ideals which are his and his alone. His writing is an expression
of these concepts, his method of sharing what is his with others.

Because every individual is of a different nature, there exist great
contrasts to variegate the world. These contrasts are recognizable
even in a small society such as found in a campus community. Be-
cause of its small size, it is even more necessary that each individual
share his experiences and ideas with the others. Through this mutual
give and take, each person has the opportunity to expand his interests
and his understanding. Only through contrasts-the food for thought,
opinion, and discussion-can one gain understanding. And only by
understanding himself, his world, and his fellow man, can one live
with the full appreciation of life.

It is with this ideal that we present Contrast-sa magazine with
cheer and sadness, humor and thought, fantasy and reality-the con-
cepts of the students at Western Maryland College. It is for the read-
ers of Contrast to consider these concepts-to agree, to disagree, and
to formulate and present ideas of their own. For it is the ideas of
this generation that form the world of the next.
