Saturday, May 20, 1989 marked Western Maryland College's 119th commencement ceremony, and approximately 355 Master's and Bachelor's degrees were awarded. With greetings from James Car- ceo. class president; James P.Gallagher, President of the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science; and Christianna Nichols, Assistant Professor of Political Science, the ceremony lasted just over two hours. Timothy Whitney received the Argonaut award for graduating at the top of hisclass with a 3.9+ G.P.A. Five honorary degrees were awarded. Julian A. Tavenner, Chaplain Administrator of Asbury Vil- lage in Gaithersburg, MD, was named honorary Doctor of Divinity, and William Bevard Dulany, a college trustee, received a Doctor of Laws degree. Dolores Cauwels Snyder, President of WMC Develop- ment Corporation, received a Doctor of Humane Letters degree as did W. James Hindman, President of Jiffy Lub International, Inc., and William Sloane Coffin, Jr., President of E/FREEZE,the nation's largest peace organization.
