u It's Thursday night, and Mary- Beth Craig and John Olsh can o barely contain themselves. Thisyear had an atmosphere of change and improvement. Itseemed like everywhere there were sign of significant happenings. Ihot's not to say significantthingsdon't happen every year; of course they do. Thisyear they just seemed more prevalent. With ground being broken in April 1989, the extensive renovation and refurbishment of the Hoover Library began. Inside, the library continued adding resources in the form of computer CDsfeaturing humanities, social science, and education indexes. Meanwhile, other buildingsand structures on campus got face-lifts: the gazebo between Whiteford and McDaniel, the brick wall behind BigBaker, and the basement of Memorial to name a few. There was also the reconstruction of the first floor of Blanche Ward after a summer fire caused extensive damage. The campus media groups felt the waves of change, too. The Phoenix found a new editor-in-chief in Mary Baschoff. The college radio station, WMCR,continued developing towards a more organized and professional broadcasting style with notable improvements. And the yearbook office was moved from BlancheWard to a more central location inthe basement of Daniel Mclea. Of.course, there were many other changes happening: too many to list here. Read on then and see how Fall1988and Spring 1989stood out. Find out what other changes took place as we try to answer the question, "What's all the commotion?" The new reference librarian, Mark Collier, falls to keep MI- chele Sampson's attention. Suffering from the effects of weather, the gazebo received a face-lift this year. 2
