Western Maryland has a commitment to the liberal arts tradition that I find oppealing. I think there ismore to intellectual development than simply learning one aspect of a small concentration very well. The faculty isone of the most committed to teaching of any faculty I've seen. I want to be at a place where people are primarily interested in teaching other people. As a young kid I knew I was interested in something but I never knew what it was' Certain things that would really turn me on . certain things that I'd read or hear or watch, and really be interested in. I never really knew what that had to do with what I was going to do or what I was interested in as a person. It took me a long time to discover that the question I had been asking was a very common one: why do animals, human or otherwise, act the way they do? Why do people, dogs, cats, birds behave in certain ways. LuckilyI ended up in a position to find some tentative answers. It happened by sheer good fortune since I never really knew what I was interested in until after I was interested in it! STEPHEN COLVER 22
