Operation Hinge Hinge-a joint, connection, union, axis. Operation Hinge is a tutorial project organized and directed by college students, with tutors drawn from the students in the Westminster public schools. The year 1968-69 was marked with development and diversification. Sponsored for the first time at West End and William Winchester Elementary Schools were tutoring projects devoted to students with specialized remedial needs. Active committees planned Saturday morning arts and crafts workshops featuring fingerpainting and paper mache work. In adition to the regular academic tutor- ing, cooking and sewing classes were conducted by sev- eral female tutors. The year was highlighted by such special activities as an autumn picnic and a spring roller party. Aside from the fruits of these visible endeavors, much more is gained by the tutor and tutee. The one-to-one relationship between the college student and the Hinge kid fosters a lasting reciprocal friendship. ,',1 131
