DECEPTION

Ages and eons have long gone by
Since birds discovered they could fly.
For years they soared above the ground,
Content with the truth that they had found.
Mighty and brave, one bird so strong,

Thought to himself, "There's something wrong!
High in the air, I should not be,
For I do lack the ability.

My ancestors, too, were much deceived
In that old lie to have believed."
And certain his belief was sound,
He fell to earth and hit the ground,
Rejecting that which made him a bird,

He shed his wings and joined the herd--
Proclaiming all that he was not,

He took up life with the common lot.
Others fell with self-same ease;

Their naked brother , they did please.
Together they roam the forest bare,
Trampled by the creatures there.

Disclaiming the truth which set them free--
They do Possess the ability !
          For surely no deception rare

Allowed their parents command of the air.
They now live in depravity.

VERSUCH

He tried to tell them that he was the center
of the universe. He tried to tell them
that he had to be, since if the universe
was infinite, it stretched out from him
as far in one direction as in any other.

They listened, laughed, took their coffee break.
