               SHE ASKED

She asked

        but there was no one;
        no one to hear and
        no one to answer.

She heard

        but ther-e was no one;
        no one to tell and
        no one to understand.

So she sat alone
        and she lived thus
        as long as she lived.

Loving, hating, knowing
        no one.

But when she died

        she became one of the crowd;
        one of the many
        one of the faceless mob.

For only the living are unique
        and w hiIe they live
        they can know no one.

ONE BARE TREE

One bare tree and a gray sky

By the window framed,
Yesterday.

Today white crystalline fluff
bedecks theĀ· black stalks
and sparkles gold,
From sunlight in the blue sky.

Today
I can still rememher--yesterday.
