Interlibrary Loan Service is provided only to McDaniel College students and faculty. Normal turnaround time for receipt of ILL books is about two weeks and about one week for articles. During peak periods, backlogs may develop causing some delays. We recommend that needed materials be requested early in the semester for best results.

ILL forms are available in the library but requests may also be placed by the Book or Article ILL Request forms available online. For further assistance, contact Lisa Russell at (410) 857-2288 or at lmrussel@mcdaniel.edu.

What is Interlibrary Loan?     

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service for students, faculty, and staff to obtain materials not owned by Hoover Library. We can request items from libraries throughout the United States.

Who can use ILL?     

Current students, faculty, and staff of McDaniel College who possess a valid ID card.

What kinds of materials can I borrow?     

Usually books and photocopies of journal articles.

Are there any materials not available through ILL?     

We will order any material you request for your research, however, most libraries won't lend audio-visual materials, dissertations, reserve items, or reference materials.

If a book I need is checked out, lost, or on reserve may I borrow it through ILL?     

Yes, you may request a book that is checked out, lost, or on reserve.

How do I place an ILL request?     

ILL request forms are available at the Reference Desk.

Can I request ILL materials from my dorm room or from home?     

Yes. Follow the links at the top of the page to fill out the on-line request forms.

How long does it take until the request comes in?     

Allow at least 5-10 business days. During peak periods, there may be some delays so please submit your requests early in the semester to ensure timely delivery.

How much does it cost?
Most Interlibrary Loan fees are absorbed by the library.
How will I be notified when my request comes in?     

We will notify you by campus mail or regular mail.

Will I be notified if the library is unable to get my request?     

Yes, we will notify you by campus or regular mail if we are unable to get a requested item.

Whom do I contact if I need assistance with ILL?     

You can speak with ILL staff by coming to the Reference Office or calling 410.857.2288. The ILL department is staffed from 8:00am-4:00pm Monday through Friday.

How long can I keep my ILL materials?     

The lending library determines the loan period, but usually you may keep loaned material for 28 days.

How much are fines if a book is returned late?     

The lending library determines the fine, but usually the cost is 25 cents a day for each day a book is overdue.

Can I renew ILL materials?     

Unless otherwise noted, most items can be renewed. You must request renewals through the ILL department.

Do I need to return copies of articles?     

No, they are yours to keep.

Where do I return ILL materials?     

They should be returned to the Circulation Desk in Hoover Library or placed in the book drop.
