  • Academic Search Premier (Ebsco) Provided by the Maryland Digital Library.
    • Multidisciplinary database indexing over 3000 journals and magazines and full text for over 1,200 titles (i.e. only some articles are available full text).
    • 1990 to present, but dates vary widely with the journal.
  • Academic Universe (LexisNexis)
    • Full text of U.S. and international newspapers, magazines, newsletters and journals; wire service reports; transcripts of television & radio news broadcasts; reviews, entertainment & sports news; Chronicle of Higher Education and student newspapers; foreign language news; and more.
    • Includes full text of the New York Times (June 1980 through current; abstract from 1969 to May 1980); Baltimore Sun (Jan. 1994 through current); and Washington Post (1997 through current).
    • Note: This database provides text only, i.e. no images, charts, tables, etc.
  • Expanded Academic Index ASAP (InfoTrac)
    • Multidisciplinary database with about 2000 titles indexed and 1000 titles in full text (i.e. only some articles are available full text).
    • 1980 to present, but dates vary widely with the journal.
  • JSTOR
    • Full text of 254 journals in 19 academic disciplines.
    • Reviews of academic books.
    • Consists of first issue of journal up to the most current 2 to 5 years, i.e. 1995 to 1999.
  • New York Review of Books
    • One of the leading periodicals in the U.S. devoted to book reviews.
    • Search for articles from 1963 to present.
    • Full text from Nov. 1996 to present.
    • Hoover Library holds current paper issue on newspaper rack on the 2nd floor.
    • Library keeps paper issues in bookcase with other newspapers on the 2nd floor until microfilm arrives.
    • Library carries back issues on microfilm from 1963 (vol.1) to present.  Located on the 2nd floor.
  • New York Times on the Web Books
    • The leading U.S. newspaper publication devoted to book reviews.
    • Search for book reviews, book news and author interviews from 1996 to present.
    • Paper version of the New York Times Book Reviews appears in the Sunday Editon of the New York Times.
    • Hoover Library keeps paper issues of the New York Times until microfilm arrives. Issues are placed in bookcase with other newspapers on the 2nd floor.
    • Library carries back issues on microfilm from 1851 (vol.1) to present.  Located on the 2nd floor.
  • Project Muse Provided by the Maryland Digital Library.
    • Search from over 100 journals in the humanities and the social sciences.
    • Only journals from the 45 Johns Hopkins Press are full text.
    • Dates vary widely, mostly 1996 to present.

  • Reference Reviews (Gale.com)
    • Reviews of reference materials (books, CD-ROMs and online resources) by Peter Jasco, Blanche Woolls, David Loertscher, John R.M. Lawrence, and James Rettig.
    • 1997 to present.
  • Semiotic Review of Books
    • Refereed journal devoted to review of books in the humanities and the social and natural sciences "which bear upon symbolic and communicative behaviour, cognitive systems and processes, cultural transmission and innovations, and the study of information, meaning and signification in all forms." 
    • 1990 to present.

    • Provides citations to and excerpts of reviews of fiction and nonfiction in the English language. Tends to cover books of general interest. Books must have been published or distributed in the U.S. or Canada. Excludes government publications, textbooks, and technical books in the sciences and law.
  • Book Review Index (1965 to present)
    • (Call number: Index 010 B725)
    • Gives citations to reviews of scholarly, professional and popular books.
  • General Science Index (H.W. Wilson)
    • Indexes journals and magazines covering astronomy, atmospheric science, biology, botany, chemistry, conservation, earth science, environment, food, genetics, health, mathematics, medicine, microbiology, nutrition, oceanography, physics, physiology, and zoology.
    • 5/1984 to present.
