1. How do I check out materials?
To check materials out, simply bring them to the Circulation Desk along with your McDaniel College ID card or library-issued borrower’s card.

2. Who can borrow materials?
Everyone is welcome to use the library and its resources, but in order to check out materials, you must be one of the following:

  • Current McDaniel student, faculty (including emeriti), administrator, staff, or trustee
  • McDaniel College alumni
  • McDaniel College family member (register using the McDaniel ID card of the affiliated faculty, administration, or staff person)
  • Carroll Library Partnership member (Carroll Community College students and in-state Carroll County Public Library patrons can register using their current borrowers card)
  • Student from a college that is a member of the Baltimore Academic Library Consortium (BALC) or one of several Maryland Independent Colleges and Universities Association (MICUA) libraries (students can register using their college ID card)

Non-campus library patrons must register for a temporary borrower’s card before checking out materials. For more information, please see our Borrowing Guidelines for Alumni & Non-Campus Patrons.

3. How long can I check out materials?
The length of the loan period varies based on the borrower and the type of item.

For students:

  • Books: 4 weeks
  • AV Items (CDs, DVDs, videotapes) : 3 Days
  • Reserves: 1 Hour, 3 Hours, 24 Hours, or 1 Week as specified by the instructor
  • Lab Key Cards: 72 Hours

For non-campus borrowers:

  • Books: 3 weeks

4. How do I renew materials?
Materials can be renewed online or in person at the Circulation Desk. Click here to log in to your library account.

5. How do I know if I have overdue items?
First overdue notices are sent via e-mail 7 days after items become overdue. If items are not renewed or returned after the first notice is sent, a second overdue notice is sent via campus or USPS mail. If items are still not renewed or returned after 90 days overdue, they will be considered lost and the patron will be charged a $65 replacement fee.

Failure to return items can result in suspension of library privileges until the account is cleared. Students may be denied the ability to register for class, access their transcripts, and/or graduate.

6. What are charges for items that are overdue?

Books: $0.25 per day
AV materials: $1.00 per day
Reserves: $0.50 per hour
Maximum fine: $25.00 per item
Lost item charges: $65.00 per item
Replacement lab & library keys: $100.00 per item

7. Can I return a “lost” book?
Books that are more than 90 days overdue are considered to be lost and are billed at a rate of $65 per item. If you return a book that is more than 90 days overdue, we will waive the lost item replacement fee and charge you only for any applicable overdue fines. Please note: it may take up 2 business days to adjust charges that have already been sent to the Bursar’s Office.

8. Where do I pay my fines and charges?
You will receive a billing notice from the library any time you incur charges that will include information about how to pay.

Students:
Charges are sent to the Bursar’s Office and must be paid there.

Non-campus borrowers:
Charges can be paid at the Circulation Desk. Please note: the library does not accept credit or debit cards.

9. How do I find and check out an item that my professor placed on reserve for my class?
Reserve materials are shelved behind the Circulation Desk. To search for reserves, click on the Course Reserves link in the library catalog. Please note: many reserve materials are designated for in library use only.

10. Where do I find my Interlibrary Loans?
Items requested through the Interlibrary Loan Office can be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

11. How can I request an item/place a hold?
Items can be requested using our online catalog by clicking on the “Place Request” button in the item record. You will need to be logged in to your online patron account in order to place the request. Please note:

  • When searching for items that are held by the Carroll County Public Library or Carroll Community College, be sure to have search parameters set to search all libraries.
  • McDaniel patrons may only place requests for items owned Hoover Library if our copy is currently checked out.

12. Can I manage my account online?
Yes you can! Click here to access to your library account online.

13. How can I reserve a Group Technology Room?
The Group Technology Rooms located on the 3rd Floor can only be reserved and used by current McDaniel students, faculty, and staff. Reservations can be made at the Circulation Desk for up to 2 hours at a time. Please note: rooms can only be reserved by groups of two or more people, and all members of the group must be present when the key to the room is checked out.
