What is an Information Commons?
The concept of the Information Commons has been evolving on college campuses for approximately a decade. Many are located in the library as the central core of learning activity outside the classroom. Alternative names for these spaces include Learning Commons, Learning Center and other variations specific to the institution. Some common elements in information commons design include:
- Workspaces for a variety of group learning activities in a technology rich environment
- Access to resources and support that enable research, writing, and technology skills development
- Comfortable study options for students who want to learn in social groupings
- Inviting and colorful environments that attract students
