Choice Reviews Online

Choice Reviews Online is a source that will support your collection development activities by allowing you to find book reviews with an easy-to-use search interface.  This is a web-based alternative to the Choice cards the library sends to each department and includes reviews from 1988 to present.

Getting In and Logging Out

  • Website address = http://www.cro3.org
  • Campus wide access = no need to login for basic browsing, searching, etc.
  • Off campus access = click on the “Off-Campus Access” link on the library’s home page, login, then proceed to the A-Z Database List page.
  • Only two people can access the resource at one time, so make sure you click on the “Logout from CRO” link to close your session and free it up for another user.  Just closing out of the browser doesn’t log you out.
  • You’ll need to disable pop-up blockers to email, download, or print reviews.

QUICK SEARCH:  Type keywords into the “Quick Search” box at the upper left of the home page to search on one of the following:

  • Keyword (in title)
  • Keyword (in review)
  • Author/Editor
  • Publisher
  • Choice issue
  • ISBN
  • Choice review #

–Keyword searching will retrieve all word variations (e.g., civil will retrieve civil, civilized, and civilization).  If you want to limit to a specific word or phrase, use quotation marks (e.g., “civil” or “civil rights”).
–You can also limit the search to the current issue by changing the default “All issues” to “Current issue.”

ADVANCED SEARCH:  Click on “Advanced Search” on the top menu bar to combine search terms and use additional limits.  In addition to the Quick Search options above, the following expanded options are offered:

  • Keyword in LC subject = Library of Congress subject headings
  • Keyword (all)
  • LC# = Library of Congress classification numbers
  • Reviewer’s name
  • Reviewer’s affiliation

–Many more ways to limit searches are available as well, such as:

  • Choice Subject Heading
  • Readership Level
  • Recommendation Level
  • Copyright Year
  • Choice Issue [can choose more than one]
  • Format [e.g., Books Only]
  • LC Classification
  • Interdisciplinary Categories [can choose more than one]
  • Outstanding Academic Titles

BROWSE CURRENT ISSUE:  To browse new reviews, click on “Current Issue” on the top menu bar, scroll down to the “Browse Reviews” section, and click on one of the subject areas listed.  Note:  Each new issue is added at mid-month in the previous month (e.g., the Sept. issue is added close to Aug. 15).
BROWSE THREE PREVIOUS ISSUES:  To browse reviews and feature articles from one of the three previous issues, use the “Recent Issues” section on the left side of the home page and click on one of the issue dates listed.

What You Can Do with Reviews

  • Print it
  • Email it
  • Add a link to a specific review from a web page (click on specific review and copy the URL, e.g., http://www.cro2.org/default.aspx?page=reviewdisplay&pid=3157703)
  • Download it to your computer as a comma-delimited Excel file (includes citation but not review text).
  • Send to the library to order it from your departmental funds:  Email the review to lgarber@mcdaniel.edu or your department’s liaison and type in your department as the Subject (ex. Art Dept.
